Fedrigoni 366 – 2020 Calendar design submission
Fedrigoni 366 is a calendar, designed by TM Studio, for Fedrigoni papers UK. Annually UK-based creative studios and individual graphic designers are selected to contribute. Each participant must submit a graphical representation of a date selected at random. The calendars can be purchased from Counter Print.
Now in its third year, the calendar design transitions from the b&w of year 1 + 2 and delivers a full spectrum of colour for year 3, via the environmentally-friendly Woodstock range. Woodstock is one of the most environmentally-friendly coloured ranges available, formed with 80% recycled and 20% FSC® certified virgin fibres. To reduce the impact of production further the calendar has been Carbon Balanced and TM Studio minimised waste by creating the covers and various page sections from single B1 sheets.
This year design studio Superfried was assigned the 12 September. I liked the typographic design possibilities offered by the 2, but I was not really feeling the 1. This number felt much more limited with less scope for my usual typographic experiments. Consequently, I decided to apply some creative strategy with a switch to an alternative number format – Roman numerals. With the new numeric system in place, I found it was much easier to simplify and experiment with the typographic design.
I like the idea of developing a subtle connection between each of Superfried's selected design solutions in the Fedrigoni 365 Calendar series – 2019, 2020 and 2021. The design submission for the previous year had experimented with the illusion of depth. This was achieved once again, via the simple graphic design technique of incremental path weights.
